Eighty questions is a long test, and this sheet keeps it in the familiar two-column shape: 1 to 40 down the left, 41 to 80 down the right, four bubbles on every row. Nothing about the layout needs explaining beyond the usual column order.

Forty rows per column is tall, so the bubbles are smaller than on the sheets up to sixty questions, though still larger than on the 100-question grid. The whole paper stays on a single side, which is what most people want from a long answer sheet.

Who this sheet is for

  • Eighty-item tests and end-of-semester tests
  • Practice tests sitting between 60 and 100 questions
  • Teachers who prefer two columns to three or four
  • Single-sided exams that are easy to collect

When to choose this sheet, and when not to

Choose eighty questions in two columns when you want the familiar shape of a long answer sheet and can accept bubbles a little smaller than on the shorter ones. At 4.5 mm they are still larger than the 100-question sheet's, which has to squeeze fifty rows into each column.

If students need bigger bubbles, the 75-question sheet's three columns give the largest size at a similar length, though with an extra column to follow. If you only need sixty items, that sheet gives larger bubbles in the same two columns.

Print a trial copy and check that the last row of each column is fully on the page. At forty rows per column, a printer that adds its own margin can clip the bottom.

An example

A school sets an eighty-question end-of-semester test. Every student gets the same single sheet, and a team of two teachers grades the whole grade level with a punched overlay.

  1. Open the PDF and choose File → Print.
  2. Set the scale to Actual size or 100%. Turn off “Fit to page”, “Shrink to fit” and any borderless option.
  3. Set the paper size to US Letter (8.5" × 11").
  4. Print one copy and check the four corner squares: each should sit about 5 mm (3/16 inch) in from the paper edge.

Why the fuss? A page scaled by even two percent moves every bubble slightly, and a camera grader measures where a bubble should be. Print at true size and the grid is where the grader expects it; print scaled and it may not be.

Printing note. Forty rows per column leave little slack. Print one trial copy at 100% and check the bottom of each column before you print a class set.

How to use it

  1. Print one copy per student at 100% scale, single-sided.
  2. Have students fill in the header block first — name, date and class, and the Student ID grid if this sheet has one.
  3. For each question, fill one bubble completely. A half-filled bubble is a common cause of a mark being missed, and an X or a check mark can be another.
  4. Erase cleanly and completely. Smudged erasures can read as filled bubbles to a camera.
  5. Grade against an answer key — see the guide on making a test key overlay.
