A half-sheet is 8.5 by 5.5 inches: the full width of US Letter paper and half its height. Twenty questions in two columns of ten fit that shape with room for a Name, Date and Class header, so two students' answer sheets print on one page.

Each half is a complete sheet with its own corner squares and header, separated by a dashed line to cut along. Compared with the quarter-sheet exit ticket, the half-sheet is wider, which makes names easier to write, and it can hold up to twenty-five questions.

Who this sheet is for

  • Weekly twenty-question quizzes on a copy budget
  • Vocabulary and spelling checks
  • Classes of twenty to forty students where a full page per student is wasteful
  • Homework checks collected and graded in one pass

When to choose this sheet, and when not to

Pick the half-sheet when a test is twenty to twenty-five questions and you would otherwise print a mostly empty page per student. Halving the paper halves the copy count, and the two-column layout keeps the bubbles at the largest size this site uses.

If your quiz has ten or fewer questions, the four-up exit ticket page saves more paper. If it has more than twenty-five, use a full-page sheet: the half-sheet layout is offered for 10 to 25 questions, the range it was designed and verified for.

You will need to cut. One cut per page across the middle, ideally on a paper cutter, gives two slips; a class set of thirty-two needs sixteen pages.

An example

A teacher gives a twenty-item vocabulary check every Friday to four sections. The master prints on half as many sheets as there are students, each page is cut in half, and the stack is graded with a punched overlay.

  1. Open the PDF and choose File → Print.
  2. Set the scale to Actual size or 100%. Turn off “Fit to page”, “Shrink to fit” and any borderless option.
  3. Set the paper size to US Letter (8.5" × 11").
  4. Print one copy and check the four corner squares: each should sit about 5 mm (3/16 inch) in from the paper edge.

Why the fuss? A page scaled by even two percent moves every bubble slightly, and a camera grader measures where a bubble should be. Print at true size and the grid is where the grader expects it; print scaled and it may not be.

Printing note. Print at 100% and cut once, along the dashed line across the middle. A paper cutter gives a clean edge; the cut passes between the two sets of corner squares, so neither set is clipped.

How to use it

  1. Print one copy per student at 100% scale, single-sided.
  2. Have students fill in the header block first — name, date and class, and the Student ID grid if this sheet has one.
  3. For each question, fill one bubble completely. A half-filled bubble is a common cause of a mark being missed, and an X or a check mark can be another.
  4. Erase cleanly and completely. Smudged erasures can read as filled bubbles to a camera.
  5. Grade against an answer key — see the guide on making a test key overlay.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a half-sheet?

8.5 by 5.5 inches: the full width of US Letter paper and half its height.

How many questions fit on a half-sheet?

Up to twenty-five in this layout family. This page is set up for twenty, in two columns of ten rows. For other counts use the generator, which offers half-sheets for 10 to 25 questions.

Do both halves need a name?

Yes. Each half is its own answer sheet with its own Name, Date and Class lines, so a slip can be returned to its owner after you cut.

Can I make a key for the half-sheet?

Yes. In the generator choose 2 sheets per page and 20 questions, mark the key, and download either the marked key or the cutout overlay key.

Can I print the half-sheet page on A4?

This page is drawn for US Letter. The generator does not offer half-sheets on A4, because that layout has not been verified.
